KUALA LUMPUR: IN every natural disaster, there will be a committed few who carry on with their duties without fuss.

Deputy director-general of Health Datuk Dr Lokman Hakim found that out when assessing flood relief efforts in Kemaman, Terengganu, recently. There, he came to know of the sacrifices Health Ministry staff had been making to help flood victims, and to ensure hospitals and their equipment were well protected. Dr Lokman said he was moved to tears by the sacrifices Kemaman Hospital staff were making. The hospital, he said, had been turned into a flood relief centre because staff members were also among the victims.

Their priority, said Dr Lokman, was the patients, the victims and the hospital itself -- never themselves.

"I was told that hospital staff were busy relocating medical equipment, despite knowing their homes were   inundated."

He was   around when three hospital staff returned from a perilous  trip to flood-affected areas.

The trio -- a young doctor by the name of  Nur Baiti Yusoff, Asst Medical officer  Saiful Azri Zainuabidin and nurse Norwati Muhammad -- epitomised the spirit and determination of   the hospital staff, he said.

Their colleagues  were worried  when the three did not return from a boat trip through the floods the previous day.

"They did not return to the base (hospital) as their boat capsized when it got tangled with a loose power cable. What kept them alive was their life jackets.
"The three had to spend the night on a riverbank, clinging   to a tree branch, in the rain. Luckily, another boat came to their rescue and brought them to an abandoned store nearby," Dr Lokman told the New Straits Times in a text message.

Upon their return to the hospital, Dr Lokman greeted the trio and found himself shedding tears when they told him that they were ready to go out again.
"When they  returned, they just cleaned themselves up and continued to work. I did not realise that my tears started flowing upon witnessing such a sacrifice taking place right before my eyes.

"I am proud to bear witness to their integrity and commitment. Indeed, I am proud of these unsung heroes," he said, adding that Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya was also present to observe the situation.
